For a richer flavor, use browned butter instead of shortening. Toast the walnuts before chopping to enhance their nutty taste. If you don't have walnuts, pecans or almonds make excellent substitutes. Store the cooled bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.
