Prepare the patties: Cut the crust off the sandwich bread and tear the bread into small pieces. In a medium bowl, mix the bread pieces with milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined. Add the ground beef and gently mix until just incorporated. Avoid overmixing to keep the burgers tender. Shape the mixture into 2 equal patties, about 1/2-inch thick. Use your thumb to make a shallow indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up during cooking. (10 minutes)
